One of the reasons for the slower speed of the dial up internet connection lies in the protocol called handshaking that these services use to connect to the web. The handshaking protocol is characterized by the few chirps that the modem usually makes while connecting to the Internet, there are two handshakes that are being performed each and every time the user connects to the Internet.

The first handshake is called the modem handshake, which actually connects the machine to the Internet; this requires quite a lot of time. On the other hand, the second hand shake, which is performed after the first one is referred to as the software handshake, as this protocol, authenticates the user to the Internet Service Provider.

As the time taken up by these two handshaking protocols is enormous, most dial up service providers; have shortened the second handshaking protocol. The second handshaking has been shortened considerably so that now users can authenticate their machines faster and thereby log into the Internet as soon as possible.

Another way in which the service providers have decreased the time required to surf load a webpage is by enabling compression of the data. As soon as we start loading a new webpage, a new set of data starts entering our computer via the dial up connection. If the number of pictures and the amount of data were high, then it would take a longer amount of time to make its way to our computer. Since we cannot increase the bandwidth of a dial up connection, we have to compress the data into smaller packets so that it takes lesser amount of time to load onto our screens.
